The new-gen 2 Series Gran Coupe will launch tomorrow as BMW’s entry-level model in India.
A new generation of the BMW 2 Series Gran Cup is set to go on sale in India tomorrow. The new 2 Series Gran Coupe will replace the outgoing model as BMW’s entry-level offering for the Indian market. Ahead of its imminent launch, let’s go over five aspects of the new 2 Series Gran Coupe that prospective buyers should consider.
What is the new BMW 2 Series expected price in India?
Anticipated to cost around Rs 50 lakh

The new 2 Series Gran Coupe will launch in India on July 17and we expect its pricing to land in the Rs 50 lakh ballpark for the sole petrol-powered 218 trim. Compared to the outgoing 2 Series Gran Coupe, which is priced at Rs 44.4 lakh, the new-gen model is likely to command a premium of around Rs 5.5-6 lakh.
Which engine powers the new BMW 2 Series?
Less powerful than its predecessor

Unlike the diesel and petrol engine options offered with the previous-gen model, the new 2 Series Gran Coupe will be available with only the latter, at least at launch. Notably, the powerplant under the hood of the new 2 Series Gran Coupe is a downsized 1.5-litre, 3-cylinder turbo-petrol unit that produces 156hp and 230Nm – 20hp and 50Nm down compared to the outgoing model’s 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. This output is routed to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.
What is the new BMW 2 Series like to drive?
3-cylinder engine isn’t thrilling to drive and gets noisy

In our review of the new 2 Series Gran Coupewe noted that vibrations from the 3-cylinder motor make it into the cabin at idle, but things feel smoother once you set off. However, the engine’s power delivery is rather linear and unexciting, and past the 4,000rpm mark, it gets audible, too. BMW claims that the new 2 Series Gran Coupe can hit 100kph from rest in 8.6 seconds.
Throttle response can be mildly improved by switching to the ‘Sport’ drive mode, and there’s a ‘Boost’ mode as well, which adjusts the gearing electronically to deliver 10 seconds of additional torque for quick overtakes.
Which features does the new BMW 2 Series get?
New Digital Key allows for remote control of in-car functions

One of the more prominent feature additions in the new 2 Series Gran Coupe is the Digital Key, which allows owners to control functions like locking/unlocking, cabin pre-cooling and boot access via their smartphones and can also be shared with up to five users. There’s a roof-mounted camera in the cabin that can record video and photos, which can be exported to your phone.
20.95 inches worth of screen on the dashboard

The new 2 Series Gran Coupe also gets a dual-screen setup comprising a 10.7-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display, a 360-degree camera, a panoramic sunroof, an ADAS suite, a wireless charger, auto-park assist, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ambient lighting, and more.
What cars rival the new BMW 2 Series?
Only one rival currently

Once it launches, the new 2 Series Gran Coupe will take on the Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan priced at Rs 46.05 lakh. While the A-Class A 200’s 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine is slightly smaller than that of the new 2 Series Gran Coupe, it has an extra cylinder and develops 163hp and 270Nm – 7hp and 40Nm more than the BMW.
