The African Development Bank (BAD) confirmed its desire to support Tunisia in the revival of the light metro project in Sfax, the country’s second agglomeration. This strategic commitment, intended to strengthen the urban transport sector, was reiterated on Friday during an official meeting in Tunis.
This meeting brought together the Minister of Transport, Rached Amari, a BAD delegation, as well as senior executives from the Ministry of Transport and a representative of the Ministry of Economy and Planning.
It made it possible to take stock of the methods of an effective revival of the project, long -standing for lack of financing and clear arbitration.
Technical support in first phase
At first, the AfDB has committed to providing technical support for updating studies of the light metro project, which represents a structuring infrastructure for the city of Sfax. This step is crucial to redefine the contours of the project, update technical data and integrate new Tunisian state priorities in terms of sustainable and inclusive transport.
Once this phase has been completed, the AfDB could study the possibility of partial or total financing of the project, according to methods to be defined, within the framework of its portfolio of support for infrastructure in North Africa.
A strategic partnership
Minister Rached Amari praised the quality of cooperation between Tunisia and BAD, qualifying the Pan -African institution as a “trusted partner” for the development of the country. He highlighted the importance of the light metro project to unclog the transport network in Sfax, improve urban mobility and support the transition to less polluting modes of transport.
The discussions have also focused on other structuring projects awaiting realization in the transport sector, with the objective of accelerating their implementation thanks to better interinstitutional coordination.
The BAD, present for decades in Tunisia, remains a major player in development financing. She participated in the realization of several major projects in the water, energy, infrastructure and logistics sectors.
