Triumph Speed 400 cafe racer launching in early August

The latest 400cc Triumph model to be launched will be the Speed 400-based cafe racer, which has been spotted testing numerous times already. We have received a ride invite from Bajaj in the first week of August, which is likely to be the same time frame when this latest 400cc Triumph will launch.

What will Triumph’s latest 400cc bike be called?

Speed 400 RS and Thruxton 400 seem like credible possibilites

Triumph’s 400cc portfolio is set to be bolstered by the Bajaj-built Speed 400-based cafe racer, which will be launched in the coming weeks. From previous spy shots and our experience with the Speed 400, we’ve been able to establish that this cafe racer will be mechanically very similar to the small Speed. As such you can expect the 40hp/37.5Nm-making 398cc mill to be carried over with the same chassis components as well.

Triumph and Bajaj will differentiate this bike from the Speed 400 by using different styling and new colours. As is traditionally the case with cafe racers, this bike will have a half-fairing, clip-on bars and more rear-set footpegs. One of the new colour options – red and silver – was spotted on an uncamouflaged test mule very recently in fact and we expect more colours to round off its palette as well.

Realistically, only two questions about this new 400cc Triumph bike remain – what it will be called and where it will be positioned in terms of price. Addressing the name first, two possibilities emerge. In line with its bigger 1200cc models, Triumph could call it the Speed 400 RS or it could resurrect the Thruxton name, which was last seen on the gorgeous final edition of the company’s 1200cc twin-cylinder cafe racer.

Coming to the price of the 400cc Triumph cafe racer, we believe it will slot in somewhere between the Speed 400 (Rs 2.46 lakh) and Scrambler 400 X (Rs 2.67 lakh). Upon its launch, this niche product will sit virtually in a class of its own – the 650cc Royal Enfield Continental GT is a much heavier and faster machine with an extra cylinder and is priced a segment above (Rs 3.26 lakh – Rs 3.52 lakh, ex-showroom, Chennai).
