Spike Lee’s newest joint Highest 2 Lowest is slated to make its debut this Friday (Aug. 15), and the highly anticipated film was celebrated in style right in the legendary director’s home city. A plethora of stars gathered on Monday night (Aug. 11) at New York City’s Brooklyn Academy of Music for the red carpet premiere, and leading actors Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky were front and center for the evening’s festivities.
Attendees who came out to support the film included Chance The Rapper, Jordyn Woods, Karl-Anthony Towns, Dapper Dan, Rick Fox, Brent Faiyaz, and plenty more. Also ready for the spotlight were members of the cast, which boasted names like Ice Spice, Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson, LaChanze, Aubrey Joseph, Michael Potts, Wendell Pierce, and Elijah Wright.
Highest 2 Lowest is an English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 Japanese kidnapping drama High and Low, which is loosely based on the 1959 novel King’s Ransom by Ed McBain (Evan Hunter).
Spike Lee also previously commended Rocky’s ability to keep up with veteran actor Denzel. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last week, he urged listeners “don’t sleep on A$AP.”
“In this film, Denzel and A$AP go toe to toe,” he added. “I’ve done five films with Denzel, and when he’s in a scene with somebody, they just get overwhelmed. He’s one of the world’s greatest living actors. But A$AP wasn’t having that. Toe to toe. I mean, they were going at it.”
