When it comes to Shai, Osaka has adamantly protected her daughter’s privacy and has never shown her face on social media. The tennis champion has also been open about the “tough” realities of life as a working mom.
“My career requires me to travel for most of the year, which makes it tough when I have to be away from my daughter so frequently, but I’ve got such a great support system around,” she told Hello! Magazine. “It takes a village, and I truly couldn’t do it without mine.”
Ahead, here’s everything you should know about Naomi Osaka’s daughter Shai, who made her U.S. Open debut in 2025.

Osaka and Cordae each separately announced the arrival of their daughter shortly after her birth. During a concert at Canada’s Calgary Stampede, the rapper shared the big news: “My daughter Shai was just born a couple days ago, so I dedicate this performance to my baby girl Shai,” he told the audience in a video captured by a fan. “Love you, I’m going back home.”
Osaka, for her part, told fans via a since-deleted Instagram post. “Well that was a cool little intermission,” the new mom captioned the photos, per People. “Now back to your regularly scheduled program 🎾✌🏾💕.”
Her name has a special meaning.
Roughly two months after she gave birth, Osaka sat down for an interview ESPN during the 2023 U.S. Open. She explained to the outlet that Shai’s name means “God’s gift.”
“That’s how I wanted her to feel, like she’s God’s gift to me and her dad,” the new mom added.
Osaka had a princess-themed baby shower.
In another since-deleted Instagram post, Osaka inadvertently revealed that she and Cordae were expecting a girl via photos of a princess-themed baby shower. The tennis champion captioned the post with three emojis (“☺️🤍💜”), per People.
Earlier that year, Osaka also revealed that though she had found out the gender in February, the father-to-be did not know. “I’ve been preparing, but [Cordae] doesn’t know the gender yet, only I know,” she told People at the time. “So it’s not like I can build out the room or anything.”
Her nursery has a “cloud theme.”
Osaka sat down for an exclusive interview with People shortly after Shai’s birth to discuss interior design.
“I wanted something that felt very peaceful and serene that would help the baby and me feel comfortable,” the new mom told the publication. “The Crate & Kids team really brought that vibe to life through the color palette and all the textures, but also through the beautiful cloud mural they painted on the walls.”
She added that, after some deliberation, “We ultimately landed on the cloud theme, which feels really perfect for what we envisioned.”

Shai made her U.S. Open debut in 2025 to cheer on her mom during her first round match versus Greet Minnen (Osaka won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4). “It would be her first time at a tennis match, so I don’t know how loud she’s going to be,” Osaka said prior the tournament during an interview with Today.
Shai inspired Osaka’s new documentary.
After becoming a mother in 2023, Osaka took a leave of absence from tennis. She returned in early 2024 and has since released a documentary about the experience titled Naomi Osaka: The Second Set.
“I have multiple identities. My return to the sport is a love letter for moms,” Osaka said in the trailer.
