XANDER SCHAUFFELE’S father revealed he has boycotted the Ryder Cup because he finds it has become “unwatchable”.
Stefan Schauffele has followed his son Xander, 31, to some of his greatest ever successes on the green as he watched him win the 2024 PGA Championship.
But Stefan, 61, won’t be around this time for the two-day tournament, which concludes on Sunday at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York.
That is because the golf coach has found the Ryder Cup has taken a turn for the worse.
Stefan referred to an incident in the 2021 edition that saw fans insulting Shane Lowry’s wife.
The German-born coach then expressed his frustration after the most recent competition where Team Europe’s Rory McIlroy had a heated exchange with Team USA’s Patrick Cantlay’s caddie Joe Lacava.
Stefan told The Times: “I was there [at Whistling Straits] when they called Shane Lowry’s wife a w**** in front of him. I couldn’t believe my ears.
“Then I saw what happened in Rome. That was utterly disgusting claiming this money bull**** and Rory behaved disgustingly in my opinion.
“It’s only going to get worse. It’s ruined my appetite for the Ryder Cup. It becomes unwatchable.”
McIlroy took issue with LaCava’s overzealous celebrations after Cantlay put a crucial putt away.
The caddie waved his hat enthusiastically in a cyclic fashion toward fans, seemingly in reference to the American’s demonstration of competing “hatless” for players not receiving compensation.
The Northern Irish star argued LaCava’s celebrations got in the way of his preparation to line up his putt.
McIlroy then appeared to have challenged Justin Thomas’ caddie Jim ‘Bones’ Mackay in the car park.
