Ahmedabad: A city-based trader from the New Fatehwadi area has filed a complaint with Navrangpura police, alleging he was cheated of Rs 8.7 lakh by a man who offered him a partnership in a cigarette and gutkha wholesale business.According to the FIR, the complainant, Nikhil Solanki (33), met the accused, identified as Navratan Baheti from Jaipur, while travelling on the Duronto Express from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in Nov 2024. During the journey, Baheti introduced himself as a wholesaler and later proposed a partnership, promising high returns.A month later, Baheti met Solanki at a hotel on Ashram Road and persuaded him to rent a godown to start the business. Solanki was asked to invest Rs 15 lakh, and though he could not arrange the full amount, he pledged his wife’s jewellery and used his credit card to raise Rs 8.7 lakh. The money was transferred to Baheti through angadia and online payments between Feb 7 and 17.Despite repeated assurances, Baheti neither supplied the promised goods nor returned the money. After several failed attempts to recover his investment, Solanki approached Navrangpura police, who registered case of cheating against Baheti.
