Bollywood’s on-screen love stories have always enticed the audience. However, more than the reel, it is the real-life love stories from the lanes of Bollywood that are all things dreamy. One such tale is of Sridevi and Boney Kapoor. This love story is where a North Indian Punjabi munda fell for a beauty from the South, and they fought against all odds to write their happily ever after.
Sridevi and Boney Kapoor’s love story
Boney Kapoor first noticed Sridevi in the late 1970s while watching a Tamil film. He was captivated by her talent and charm, and decided to cast her in Shekhar Kapur’s iconic movie ‘Mr. India’. At that time, Boney was already married to Mona Shourie Kapoor and had two children, Arjun and Anshula. At the time, Sridevi was a top star, earning Rs 8–8.5 lakh per film. To convince her mother to agree to ‘Mr. India,’ Boney offered Rs 11 lakh. Once she signed the film, he ensured she felt completely comfortable on set, arranging the best makeup room, top-quality costumes, and fulfilling every need. He went beyond expectations to make her feel special, reflecting his deep admiration and genuine intent.
Confession and growing bond
When Boney confessed his love, Sridevi was initially shocked and distanced herself for almost six months. Their relationship faced public scrutiny and personal challenges. Even after ‘Mr. India’ wrapped, Boney traveled to Switzerland, where Sridevi was shooting for ‘Chandni’, to express his feelings. “It took me nearly five or six years to convince her. When I proposed, she was shocked and asked me, ‘You’re married and have two kids; how can you even say this to me?’ After that, she didn’t speak to me for six months,” Boney Kapoor told in an interview with ABP.Slowly, she realized his love was sincere and persistent. The care he showed for her family further strengthened their bond.
Marriage, life, and enduring love
Boney separated from his first wife but was never formally divorced. He married Sridevi in June 1996, going public the following year. They welcomed their daughters, Janhvi Kapoor in 1997 and Khushi Kapoor in 2000. Their 21-year marriage brought joy, stability, and enduring love until Sridevi’s untimely demise on February 24, 2018, due to accidental drowning in Dubai. Boney Kapoor and Sridevi’s relationship remains one of Bollywood’s most talked-about and iconic love stories.
