Donnie Wahlberg’s Boston Blue has officially joined the fall TV lineup. As excited as loyal Blue Bloods fans are for the spinoff, they have a few questions following the premiere. Why was it necessary for Sean to be recast? Will Baez move to Boston to be with Danny now that he’s relocated and they’re in a relationship? Will Erin be a recurring character? And, while on the topic of family members, can viewers expect Frank to make an appearance, too?
As it currently stands, we don’t have official word that Tom Selleck will reprise his role as Frank Reagan in Boston Blue. Given how close New York is to Boston, however, we have reason to believe that a cameo could be only a matter of time. That and the fact that Frank was referenced more than a few times in the premiere episode on Friday, October 17. Still, it’s not a given. After all, many spinoffs reference past characters without ever bringing them back to the spotlight. But if it’s up to the cast of Boston Bluethat won’t be how the series plays out.

When we spoke to Donnie about the new series, he told us that he gave CBS one condition for filming the spinoff. He said, “I immediately made it clear to them, ‘If you keep Danny Reagan alive, I have to keep other elements of the Blue Bloods world alive.'”
Back in June, Donnie revealed to Parade that there are many ways past characters could pop up in the new series. Beyond the easily traveled geography between the shows, Donnie acknowledged that FaceTime appearances offer an opportunity as well. And he’s not the only Boston Blue actor to welcome past stars. “I’d love to work with Tom,” Ernie Hudson (Reverend Peters) told Us Weekly in October. “I never have. Over the years, I’ve certainly admired his work. I admire his work, and he’s still ready to do whatever.”
All this to say, the odds seem to be in our favor, but only time will tell if the Reagan patriarch will return. Now the only question is, will you keep tuning in to find out?
