New Delhi: The Central Government has announced to confer the prestigious 'Bharat Ratna' award on former Bihar Chief Minister Karpuri Thakur.
Karpuri Thakur is being awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously. Ahead of the 100th birth anniversary of Karpuri Thakur on Wednesday, it has been announced that he will be honored with the Bharat Ratna.
The Janata Dal United (JDU) had demanded that Karpuri Thakur be awarded the Bharat Ratna. JD(U) thanked the Modi government after this announcement.
36 years of penance has paid off
Karpuri Thakur's son Ramnath Thakur said that we have got the fruits of 36 years of penance. I want to thank the government on behalf of my family and 15 crore people of Bihar.

Who is Karpuri Thakur, a public leader of Bihar?
Karpuri Thakur was the Chief Minister of Bihar twice in the 1970s. He was a freedom fighter as well as a teacher. He hails from a backward community. Before the Mandal Movement, when he was the Chief Minister, he had given 27% reservation to backward classes. His political mentors were Loknayak Jaiprakash Narayan and Ram Manohar Lohia.
