Kolkata: Jailed Birbhum Trinamool leader Anubrata Mondal will be back at the helm of the party’s district affairs once he was released from Tihar Jailsaid senior district TMC leaders who attended a meeting with CM Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat home on Tuesday.
Banerjee told party leaders that Mondal’s aides must not be sidelined in his absence. The CM also clipped the wings of Mondal’s detractor and Birbhum zilla parishad sabhadhipati Kajol Sk, removing him from TMC’s Birbhum core committee and confining his role to only two assembly segments.
TMC MP Shatabdi Ray, speaking to reporters after the meeting, said: “Anubrata Mondal will not remain in prison indefinitely. He has toiled hard for the party and will be back (in the party) with the respect he deserves. Mondal being away does not mean that party workers and leaders he had tasked with organisational responsibilities will be removed to make way for new ones.”
The CM has formed a “five-member core committee to oversee the party’s affairs in Birbhum”, Ray added. MPs Ray and Asit Mal have been kept out of the core committee and told to focus on party work in their respective constituencies.
Asked if this was an indication that they will get renomination, Ray said: “This is very presumptive. Nothing was discussed on this.”
TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee did not attend the Birbhum meeting. Ray said: “We were told he had some work which required him to sign several documents.”
Ray added that from the party, senior minister Firhad Hakim would continue to oversee Trinamool’s Birbhum affairs.
